U.S. Stocks Hold Up to Tumultuous Year
After a wild ride in 2011, U.S. equity markets ended the year almost exactly where they began, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.4% during a year of intense volatility. By year-end, U.S. markets had regained ground lost during early October lows. International markets, however, continued to be challenged by European debt problems and slowing China growth.
